General Motors Develops Proprietary AI Assistant for Vehicles

General Motors is developing a native AI assistant combining vehicle telemetry and OnStar intelligence to surpass general-purpose AI tools in its cars.

General Motors is developing a proprietary, deeply integrated artificial intelligence assistant for its vehicles designed to exceed the capabilities of general-purpose tools like Google's Gemini. The new system will merge conversational AI with specific GM vehicle knowledge and OnStar intelligence to provide a unified digital experience.

The assistant will utilize live vehicle telemetry data to offer personalized driver settings, real-time predictive maintenance alerts, and hands-free voice management for diagnostics. The company is partnering with unnamed large language model providers to build the system, aiming to expand high-margin software subscription revenues.

While the automaker is currently integrating Gemini into millions of 2022 and newer vehicles via Android Automotive, this native system is intended to create a more tailored user experience. GM has not yet provided a specific timeline for the official release of the proprietary assistant.
