MediaNews Group Sues OpenAI and Microsoft for $10 Billion

Nine newspapers owned or managed by MediaNews Group filed a civil lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft on November 26, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The plaintiffs, which include the Los Angeles Daily News, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Boston Herald, seek damages exceeding $10 billion.

The publishers allege that the tech companies violated copyright law by scraping millions of copyrighted articles without permission or payment to build and operate large language models. According to the lawsuit, the defendants stole raw journalistic content to fuel commercial AI products while ignoring the financial interests of the creators.

This legal action follows a separate lawsuit filed in April 2024 by eight other MediaNews Group and Tribune publications, as well as a 2023 suit brought by The New York Times. OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new allegations.
