Berlin Left Party Begins Coalition Talks to Form Government
The Left party began exploratory government talks with Social Democrats and Greens in Berlin after agreeing on measures to address antisemitism accusations.
The Left party began exploratory talks on Thursday with the Social Democratic Party of Germany and Alliance 90/The Greens to form a state government in Berlin. The move follows the Left party's victory in the state elections held last month.
The three parties agreed to enter negotiations after reaching a consensus on how to address accusations that the Left party tolerates or promotes antisemitism. This agreement served as a prerequisite for the Social Democrats and Greens to join the talks.
If the coalition is successfully formed, the Left party intends to implement a campaign pledge to combat rising rents. The party plans to achieve this by seizing large property portfolios from private owners.
