Ukraine's Kairos Unit Expands Deep-Strike Campaign Against Russia
Ukraine's Kairos unit has intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and shipping, including a campaign that hit 60 ships in the Azov Sea.
The Kairos unit, recently upgraded to the Unmanned Systems Forces’ 7th Separate Center, has expanded its deep-strike operations against Russian military installations and energy infrastructure. Using a combination of cruise missiles, drones, and satellite imagery, the unit targets oil refineries, natural gas terminals, and tankers. This effort included a concentrated campaign in the Azov Sea that hit 60 ships within a single month.
During a summer operation aimed at isolating Crimea, the Unmanned Systems Forces reported executing 7,000 drone strikes. These operations have disrupted Russian data centers and caused consumer shortages, impacting the broader Russian economy. The unit's commander, known by the call sign Ray, stated that additional funding and resources would enable the unit to work seven times more, particularly in Crimea.
Despite these gains, the campaign faces operational hurdles, including limited air defenses and communication constraints. To manage these, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine negotiated a white list with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to disable Starlink service inside Russia, preventing Russian access to terminals while enabling drone flights across occupied territory.
