Salix City Council Rejects Data Center Development Moratorium
The Salix City Council voted 3-2 against a one-year moratorium on data center development following the annexation of 900 acres of farmland.
The Salix City Council voted 3-2 on Thursday to reject a proposed one-year moratorium on data center development. The decision follows the city's annexation of 900 acres of farmland for a project initiated by MidAmerican Energy, with Google identified as the prospective customer.
The council meeting was delayed by one week after city officials received death and terroristic threats on social media. During the session, some members and residents advocated for a cool-down period to research the project's impacts. However, Council member Denise Burkhart argued that the city must first engage in conversations with Google to determine the project's viability for the community.
Despite the vote, the project faces significant legal and political hurdles. The land requires rezoning, and the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors is currently challenging the city's annexation process in court. Additionally, the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has passed a resolution opposing the construction of hyperscale data centers near its reservation.
