Ukraine Unveils Russian Filin Cruise Missile Technical Details
Ukraine's military intelligence agency revealed technical specifications of the Filin, a low-cost Russian cruise missile designed to overwhelm air defenses through mass production.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR) has released technical details regarding the Filin, a low-cost winged cruise missile deployed by Russia in late summer 2026. The weapon features a carbon and fiberglass fuselage with 3D-printed components and a Russian-made engine. It is capable of carrying a 100kg warhead, reaching speeds of nearly 500 mph and a range of 745 miles.
While the engine is domestic, GUR identified foreign electronics within the missile originating from the United States, China, Japan, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. The Filin is part of a broader Russian strategy of missile spam, utilizing inexpensive, mass-produced weapons like the Filin and the Banderol to exhaust Ukrainian air defense networks.
Ukrainian drone experts Serhii Beskrestnov and Serhii Sternenko warn that the Filin represents a significant escalation over previous jet-powered Shahed drones due to its superior speed and maneuverability. Beskrestnov noted that these weapons can be launched from helicopters and UAVs and produced using Russian components, while Sternenko cautioned that the mass use of such aerial weapons is expected soon.
