Ali Pervaiz Malik Proposes Uniform Gas Pricing for Pakistan

Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik directed Sui Southern Gas Company to adopt a sustainable business model and transition to a single, uniform gas price.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik directed the Board of Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) to develop a sustainable business model and a strategy to control Unaccounted-for-Gas (UFG) to ensure financial viability. During a review meeting in Karachi, Malik proposed replacing the current slab-based subsidy system with a single, uniform gas price for all consumers.

To protect vulnerable households, the government intends to replace pricing slabs with targeted social protection programs. Malik argued that a uniform tariff would stimulate economic activity and discourage consumers from switching to alternative fuels. He specifically ordered priority action to resolve gas theft, infrastructure constraints, and supply issues in Balochistan.

SSGCL officials reported a 57 percent volumetric reduction in UFG and noted that fertilizer plants, industrial consumers, and K-Electric are currently experiencing no load shedding. The government is collaborating with the World Bank to implement these structural reforms and improve the overall financial sustainability of the gas sector.
