Fox Corporation Rejects Early NFL Media Rights Renegotiations
Fox Corporation will not amend its NFL media rights agreement before the current contract expires in 2030, despite the league's efforts to raise costs.
The Fox Corporation will not renegotiate its NFL media rights deal before the current contract concludes in 2030. Chief Executive Officer Lachlan Murdoch announced during a Thursday earnings call that the company will not make amendments to its existing agreement following recent discussions with the league.
The National Football League had held preliminary talks with Fox and Paramount Skydance to increase the cost of live rights and eliminate an opt-out clause that would otherwise permit the league to leave partners after the 2029-30 season. The NFL specifically sought higher payments, including a proposed increase of nearly $1 billion per year during talks with Paramount. While Commissioner Roger Goodell suggested that the league's rights were relatively undervalued compared to other sports, Fox intends to wait until closer to the 2030 season to engage in new negotiations.
Other media partners have not yet been engaged by the league for new deals. Hugh Johnston, the Chief Financial Officer of Disney, confirmed that the NFL has not yet initiated discussions with his company regarding a new agreement.
