One Nation Cuts Ties With Candidate Over Homophobic Remarks

The political party One Nation removed former Western Australian legislative council candidate Parminder Singh from its website after he released a social media video describing same-sex attraction as a mental illness and opposing marriage equality.

Member of Parliament Barnaby Joyce condemned the comments as highly offensive and distanced the party from Singh. Joyce asserted that One Nation is one of the gayest parties in Australia, citing a large proportion of gay members including South Australian MP James Virgo. He attributed the incident to growing pains in the party's candidate vetting process during a period of expansion.

Anna Brown, chief executive of Equality Australia, characterized Singh's views as demonstrably false and deeply harmful. Brown noted that the 2017 postal survey serves as evidence of contemporary Australian values, suggesting that voters can judge whether such views reflect the country they want to live in.
