Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Proposes Resolution Against Lok Sabha Delimitation

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will introduce a resolution in the Tamil Nadu state Assembly on Wednesday urging the Union Government to permanently maintain the Lok Sabha's strength at 543 seats. The resolution seeks to preserve the current Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha ratio of 2.2:1 and demands the immediate implementation of 33 percent reservation for women in the 2029 elections based on existing seat counts.

The Tamil Nadu government argues that any delimitation exercise based on a census conducted after 1971 would unfairly reduce parliamentary representation for southern states that successfully controlled population growth. This legislative move follows an August 8 meeting of alliance and friendly party MPs who agreed to oppose the Union Government's proposed delimitation.

Despite the consensus among some parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the August 8 meeting. Both parties criticized the proceedings, with the DMK calling the deliberations a "farce" and the AIADMK describing the event as a "hurriedly staged drama."
