Indian Refineries Ship 1 Billion Euros of Oil to Sanctioning Nations
Refineries in India, Turkiye, and Brunei exported 1 billion euros of oil products to sanctioning countries in September 2026, bypassing Russian crude bans.
Refineries in India, Turkiye, and Brunei shipped 1 billion euros of oil products to countries imposing sanctions on Russia in September 2026, marking a 43 percent increase from August. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reported that the European Union received 667 million euros of these products, followed by Australia, the United States, and New Zealand.
Reliance Industries Ltd's Jamnagar refinery supplied six of the seven cargoes unloaded at EU ports, despite a ban on fuel made from Russian crude implemented by the European Union in January 2026. While India remains the second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels, its Russian crude imports fell 13 percent in September, the second consecutive monthly decline. This decrease affected major sites including the Jamnagar and Paradip refineries, though Nayara Energy's Vadinar refinery became India's largest importer of Russian crude for the month.
The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air recommends applying sanctions at the refinery level to close existing exemptions that allow net crude exporters to process Russian oil and export the resulting products to sanctioning nations.
