OpenAI Inc. Faces Backlash Over Luxury Influencer Retreat in New York
OpenAI Inc. defended its luxury influencer retreat at Wildflower Farms after critics accused the company of greenwashing and ignoring the environmental impact of AI data centers.
OpenAI hosted its first influencer brand trip, titled Summer Club or OpenAI Summer Camp, at the luxury Wildflower Farms resort in the Hudson Valley of New York. The retreat combined workshops on ChatGPT Work with upscale activities, including beekeeping and farm-to-table meals.
The event triggered widespread backlash on X, Reddit, TikTok, and Instagram. Critics accused OpenAI Inc. of greenwashing, arguing that the eco-friendly framing was tone-deaf given the high energy and water consumption of AI data centers. Some critics also cited the company's $200 million contract with the Department of Defense as a reason for their opposition.
Company spokespeople described the trip as an education-led marketing effort to demonstrate practical product uses. While some influencers deleted their posts following the outcry, others defended their presence. Creator Grace McCarrick stated she was excited about the opportunities AI offers and wished to engage with those at the helm of technological change. Despite the controversy, sentiment analysis by CARMA indicated that 59% of online conversations regarding the event remained positive.
