UAE Official Calls for Joint Gulf Defense After Houthi Attack
Anwar Gargash urged renewed Gulf security cooperation after Houthi militias attacked King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Diplomatic adviser to the UAE president Anwar Gargash called for renewed joint Gulf cooperation in security and defense on October 12. Gargash asserted that the security of Gulf states is indivisible and warned that attacks on Saudi Arabia directly undermine the security of the UAE and the wider region.
These remarks follow a Houthi militia attack on King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the strike on October 11, describing it as a violation of the Kingdom's sovereignty.
Gargash argued that previous shortcomings in collective defense encouraged aggressors to target the region. He stated that these actors mistakenly viewed Gulf states as the weakest link in a war the region had attempted to avoid, concluding that shared security is a responsibility that allows no room for complacency.
