UniCredit Pursues Controlling Stake in Germany's Commerzbank
UniCredit is seeking a controlling stake in Commerzbank following approval from the European Central Bank to expand its presence in Germany.
The European Central Bank has approved the acquisition of Commerzbank, the second-largest bank in Germany, by UniCredit. The global banking institution expects to secure a controlling stake in the German lender within the current year as part of a broader strategic expansion.
This move follows a period of strong financial performance for UniCredit, which reported record results for the second quarter and first half of the year. The bank saw core revenues increase by 5% year-over-year and maintained a cost-to-income ratio of 34%.
UniCredit management asserts that the acquisition will unlock further value for the company. The bank has issued profit guidance projecting net profits to exceed 11 billion euros in 2024, 13 billion euros in 2028, and 15 billion euros by 2030.
