ICE Detains Over 50 People in Danbury Deportation Operation

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained more than 50 people in Danbury, Connecticut, in an operation that began Monday, August 25, 2026. The arrests affected approximately 40 families and were carried out at apartment buildings, parks, traffic stops, and in the vicinity of a daycare center and an elementary school.

This operation is part of a broader mass deportation campaign by the Trump administration, following a nationwide increase in ICE arrests throughout June and July. The federal activity persisted despite Connecticut state laws designed to limit the power of federal immigration enforcement within the state.

Local, state, and federal representatives held a news conference on Wednesday to denounce the operation, specifically citing the trauma inflicted on students returning to school. The detentions sparked protests, leading to tense confrontations between demonstrators and ICE officers, who used pepper spray on at least one occasion.
