Multiple UK Water Companies Impose Hosepipe Bans Amid Heatwave
Anglian Water and Affinity Water have implemented hosepipe bans across England, while Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water warns of imminent restrictions due to record temperatures.
Several UK water utility companies have introduced or threatened Temporary Use Bans on hosepipes following record-breaking temperatures and unprecedented demand. Anglian Water implemented a ban on July 11 across the East of England, affecting over five million customers in regions including Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex. The restrictions prohibit using mains-fed hosepipes for gardening, vehicle cleaning, and filling pools, with violators facing fines up to £1,000. The company reported that demand fell by approximately 9 percent in the first week and denied social media rumors that it uses drones for enforcement.
On July 17, Affinity Water launched a separate ban in its Central region, covering parts of London, Surrey, and Essex. The company cited water usage 20 percent higher than normal and reduced supply from the Grafham Water reservoir. Simultaneously, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water warned that it may introduce restrictions this weekend across mid and south Ceredigion, north Pembrokeshire, and north Carmarthenshire. The company reported daily demand reaching one billion litres, which is 20 percent above typical levels.
While Essex & Suffolk Water has not yet imposed a formal ban, it has appealed to customers for restraint. To address long-term resilience, Anglian Water is executing an £11 billion investment program to replace 1,000 kilometers of pipes and install 1.5 million smart meters.
