Canada and Australia Sign Trade Finance Agreement in Sydney

Export Development Canada and Export Finance Australia signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on strategic financing for critical minerals and energy transition projects.

Export Development Canada and Export Finance Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Sydney on October 27, 2026, to strengthen trade and investment ties. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration on strategic financing, co-financing, and investment projects, with a specific focus on energy security, supply chain resilience, and sustainable development.

Export Development Canada and its Australian counterpart will prioritize cooperation in critical minerals, energy transition, infrastructure, agri-food, digital technologies, and aerospace. The partnership leverages a strong existing economic relationship; in 2025, bilateral merchandise trade reached CAD$7.3 billion, while two-way direct investment exceeded CAD$86 billion.

Officials from both nations stated the agreement aims to unlock growth opportunities and enhance economic security across the Indo-Pacific region. Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu noted the agreement will help connect companies and attract investment in priority sectors, while Australian Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell said the collaboration would deepen cooperation with a likeminded partner.
