Lucasfilm Games Seeks Developer for Star Wars Battlefront 3

Lucasfilm Games is courting AAA studios to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3, with DICE and Bungie emerging as primary candidates for the project.

The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm Games are seeking a development partner for Star Wars Battlefront 3, a successor to the 2017 title Star Wars Battlefront II. The search follows the 2023 expiration of Electronic Arts' exclusive Star Wars license, allowing Disney to shop the project to multiple studios.

Reports from Electronic Gaming Monthly and industry insider Jeff Grubb identify EA DICE and Bungie Inc. as the primary frontrunners. DICE is considered the logical choice due to its history with the franchise and use of the Frostbite engine. Bungie is being considered despite its ownership by Sony Interactive Entertainment and current focus on Destiny 2 and Marathon, with some analysts suggesting the studio's interest may stem from recent financial struggles and layoffs.

Conflicting claims have emerged regarding the project's status. Joe Brammer, CEO of Bulkhead Games, asserts that a decision has already been made and that DICE and Respawn Entertainment are currently developing the game as a joint venture. However, other reports indicate no official deal has been signed as of October 20, 2026.

Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly confirmed that the company is becoming more flexible regarding the partners and pitches it accepts for Star Wars intellectual property, noting that large-scale AAA titles remain a central part of the organization's strategy.
