Hyundai Motor Group Pivots to Physical AI Solutions
Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun is transitioning the company from traditional car manufacturing into a physical AI solutions provider focusing on robotics and autonomous driving.
Executive Chair Chung Euisun is pivoting Hyundai Motor Group from traditional automotive manufacturing toward becoming a physical AI solutions company. Marking six years of leadership on October 14, 2026, Chung is integrating autonomous driving, humanoid robots, and AI-driven factories into the group's core operations.
This strategic shift follows a period of growth that established Hyundai Motor and Kia as the world's third-largest automotive group by sales, with combined annual revenue exceeding 300 trillion won last year. To execute this vision, the group is utilizing acquisitions of Boston Dynamics, 42dot, and the joint venture Motional, while maintaining partnerships with Nvidia and Waymo.
Planned initiatives include the deployment of the Atlas humanoid robot at Metaplant America in Georgia by 2028 and a 125.2 trillion won investment in South Korea between 2026 and 2030. Despite these ambitions, the transition faces headwinds from unprofitable autonomous driving ventures and recent labor strikes that resulted in an estimated 2.3 trillion won in lost sales.
