GRSE Launches Shruti Offshore Patrol Vessel for Indian Navy

The Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) launched the Shruti, the second of four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) being constructed for the Indian Navy, in Kolkata on August 11, 2026. The vessel, designated as Yard 3037, follows the May 2026 launch of the first NGOPV, Sanghmitra. Measuring approximately 113 meters in length with a 3,000-tonne displacement, the Shruti is designed for maritime interdiction, anti-piracy, mine warfare, and humanitarian assistance, capable of reaching speeds of 23 knots with an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, served as the chief guest and noted that the ship is roughly 85 percent indigenous. He linked GRSE's contributions to the indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem to the company receiving Navratna status in June 2026. The project is part of a broader program executed by GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited to support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Cmde PR Hari announced plans to deliver five warships by the end of the 2026-27 financial year, including the stealth frigate Vindhyagiri and four Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts. While detailing these targets, Hari expressed concern that the order book for naval platforms will decrease significantly once these five warships are delivered.
