Peronist Opposition Struggles to Unify Against Javier Milei

The Peronist opposition in Argentina is struggling to establish a unified leadership structure as Javier Milei seeks reelection in 2027. Milei has reduced annual inflation from nearly 300% in 2024 to over 30% through aggressive austerity and budget cuts, though these measures have caused widespread economic hardship.

Governor of Buenos Aires province Axel Kicillof is attempting to build a national alternative to the current administration, advocating for workers' rights, public health, and education. Kicillof recently addressed supporters in Avellaneda and is scheduled to meet with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to discuss the global rise of far-right leadership.

However, the movement remains fractured by loyalty to former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Currently under house arrest and banned for life from holding office following a corruption conviction, Fernández remains a central figure in Peronism. This loyalty has created a rift between Fernández and Kicillof. While lawmaker Máximo Kirchner has praised his mother's past welfare programs, opposition lawmaker Juan Grabois has called for reconciliation, arguing that Fernández still commands the greatest acceptance within Peronism.
