Turkey Raises Qualified Investor Threshold to 50 Million Liras
Turkey's Capital Markets Board increased the minimum asset requirement for qualified investors fivefold to curb losses following a significant capital markets fund rout.
The Capital Markets Board of Turkey raised the minimum financial asset threshold for qualified investors fivefold on Monday. Investors must now hold at least 50 million liras, approximately $1 million, to be classified as professional clients. This is a significant increase from the previous requirement of 10 million liras.
The regulator implemented the change following a fund rout that erased billions of dollars in equity value and caused substantial losses across capital markets. The move aims to restrict high-risk instruments to those with greater financial capacity.
Investors who do not meet the new 50 million lira threshold must provide proof of their status to maintain their classification. Those unable to do so will be restricted to placing only sell orders for financial instruments reserved for qualified investors.
