Ireland's CRU Approves Electricity Network Charge Increases

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) approved an increase in electricity network charges for Irish households effective October 1. A typical domestic customer will see an annual price increase of €41.25, which averages approximately €3.44 per month. This increase is partially offset by a 66% reduction in the Public Service Obligation (PSO) levy, which will decrease from €1.59 to 51 cents per month.

To fund these upgrades, the CRU approved revenue allowances of €1.582 billion for distribution and €1.5 billion for transmission. These approved figures are €138 million lower than the initial proposals submitted by ESB Networks and EirGrid, a reduction that lowered the potential cost to consumers by approximately €13. The funding is part of a projected €18 billion investment in the electricity network over the next five years.

These investments aim to support renewable generation, offshore grid development, and security of supply to accommodate data center growth and the transition to Net Zero. The regulator stated that it sought to balance the necessary infrastructure investments for a resilient network with the financial impact on customers.
