Kenyan Officials Defend 2.2 Trillion Shilling Dangote Refinery

Treasury Secretary John Mbadi and ODM leader Oburu Oginga defended the planned Dangote oil refinery in Lamu against land compensation protests and corruption allegations.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and ODM party leader Oburu Oginga defended the planned Dangote oil refinery in Lamu County, a project valued between Ksh.2 trillion and Ksh.2.2 trillion. The refinery, which will have a 700,000-barrel-per-day capacity, has faced opposition from local residents over insufficient public participation and land compensation disputes.

Mbadi dismissed the protests as primitive politics and accused land cartels of attempting to defraud the government. He specifically questioned brokers demanding Ksh.30 million for plots valued at Ksh.60,000. Mbadi also denied allegations from People’s Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro that President William Ruto holds shares in the refinery, noting that 30% of shareholding will be open to the East Africa region.

Oburu Oginga urged residents to support the project, describing it as a structural revolution and a lifeline for the regional economy. He called on the public to reject propaganda and manufactured friction intended to derail the investment for selfish gains.
