Jet2 Maintains Free Baggage While Jetstar Shifts to Paid Model

Two major airlines have announced divergent paths for cabin baggage policies as regulatory and operational pressures mount. Jet2.com confirmed on Tuesday that it will maintain its standard free 10kg hand luggage allowance and personal item, despite upcoming European Commission regulations scheduled for 2027. The new EU rules aim to standardize how airlines present fares and baggage allowances to allow passengers to compare costs more easily.

CEO Steve Heapy stated that the regulations change nothing for Jet2 customers, noting that the airline's generous allowance is a primary reason 80% of its customers choose the carrier. Heapy welcomed the move toward transparency, arguing that holidaymakers should not face complicated rules when bringing essentials on board.

In contrast, Jetstar will implement a new carry-on model starting February 2, 2027. The airline is removing its 7kg weight limit in favor of a size-based system. All bookings will include one underseat bag, but passengers must now pre-purchase Priority Carry-on to access overhead lockers, with one-way fees starting at $23. Chief Executive Stephanie Tully stated the shift aims to eliminate the frustration of weighing bags at the gate and streamline boarding to ensure on-time departures. Passengers with existing bookings for travel after the start date will receive Priority Carry-on for free.
