Analysts Project 2027 Social Security COLA Between 3.7% and 3.8%
The Senior Citizens League and independent analysts project a 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment between 3.7% and 3.8% based on early inflation data.
Projections for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) currently range between 3.7% and 3.8%, both of which exceed the 2.8% increase provided in 2026. The Senior Citizens League maintains a projection of 3.8%, which would add approximately $79 to the average monthly benefit. However, independent analyst Mary Johnson recently downgraded her forecast from 4.7% to 3.7% following June's Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) data.
While a higher COLA increases monthly checks, it may push some seniors into higher tax brackets for the first time. Federal taxes on benefits are determined by provisional income, and this added tax burden could offset the financial gains of the adjustment. Conversely, Mary Johnson's lower projection suggests cooling inflation, which may offer relief for retirees on fixed incomes.
The final 2027 adjustment will be determined by CPI-W data from July, August, and September, with the first key indicator expected on August 12. The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce the official COLA in mid-October, alongside updated earnings test limits and maximum monthly benefits.
