Evan Gershkovich discussed his 2023 arrest and subsequent imprisonment in Russia during an interview with Wall Street Journal Editor in Chief Emma Tucker. As the first U.S. journalist charged with espionage in Russia since the Cold War, Gershkovich spent over a year held in Moscow's Lefortovo prison.
During his detention, Gershkovich maintained a diary that now serves as the foundation for his upcoming book, "This Cursed Beautiful Land." His release was secured through a complex international effort involving diplomats, intelligence agencies, and intermediaries such as Tucker Carlson and Hillary Clinton.
Following his return to the United States via Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Gershkovich is preparing to resume his duties as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.
