Rivian Recalls R2 SUVs Over Battery Pack Defects
Rivian is recalling R2 SUVs due to improperly tightened battery pack fasteners that could cause power loss during operation.
Rivian has issued a recall for its R2 SUV after discovering that high-voltage battery packs contained improperly tightened fasteners. The defect, which could lead to a loss of power while the vehicle is in operation, was identified on September 17 when a manufacturing operator at the company's Normal, Illinois factory found that an automated assembly station was under-torquing fasteners.
The company estimates approximately 14 vehicles are affected and plans to repair or replace the damaged components. While Rivian reports no known accidents or injuries, some owners were reportedly told to stop driving their vehicles immediately. This is the second recall for the R2 since deliveries began in June, following a backup camera visibility issue addressed last month.
The R2 is a critical mass-market model intended to lead the company toward profitability. Rivian aims to ship between 20,000 and 25,000 units by the end of the year.
