UK Parties Shift Energy and Environmental Policies
Kemi Badenoch proposes scrapping green home standards and environmental agencies as the Green Party ends its opposition to nuclear power.
UK political parties announced divergent energy and environmental strategies during the party conference season. Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative Party leadership candidate, announced plans to scrap the Future Homes Standard, which mandates that new residences include heat pumps, solar panels, and high-grade insulation. Badenoch further proposed the abolition of the Environment Agency and Natural England.
In a reversal of long-standing policy, the Green Party resolved to abandon its opposition to nuclear power, citing the technology's potential for low-carbon energy generation. Simultaneously, the Labour Party announced the establishment of a publicly owned body to invest in the energy grid and a community fund dedicated to planting 500,000 trees across England.
These shifts have drawn criticism from climate experts and the UK Green Building Council. The council warned that removing green standards for new homes would disrupt construction supply chains and increase energy bills for households.
