U.S. State Department Launches Diplomacy Plan for Myanmar Minerals
The United States Department of State released a strategy to secure rare-earth minerals in Myanmar through peace diplomacy and commercial investment deals.
The United States Department of State has released a strategy document that shifts U.S. policy from isolating Myanmar's military government toward a plan of peace diplomacy. The strategy aims to secure a ceasefire and a lasting peace agreement by 2030, utilizing multistakeholder forums to resolve territorial demarcation and fiscal federalism.
A primary objective of the plan is to expand U.S. influence and secure access to rare-earth mineral deposits that are currently exported to China. To reduce the trade deficit, the U.S. mission seeks to finalize at least three commercial or investment deals valued at over $5 million each. The strategy also targets the dismantling of online scam centers that target American citizens.
This diplomatic pivot involves re-engagement talks with the government led by Min Aung Hlaing, though the coup leader remains under U.S. financial sanctions. Additionally, the State Department intends to expand cooperation regarding the repatriation of Myanmar nationals currently residing in the United States.
