Ukraine Challenges Russian Zircon Missile Claims Amid Ballistic Shift

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine published a technical breakdown of Russia's 3M22 Zircon missile, contradicting Moscow's assertions that the weapon is an invincible hypersonic cruise missile. The report identifies the Zircon as a two-stage ballistic missile with a maximum speed of Mach 6.8, which is lower than the Mach 9 speed claimed by Russia. The intelligence agency named NPO Mashinostroyeniya as the primary manufacturer and identified more than 70 companies, including some based in the United States, involved in the production process.

Ukrainian officials report that Russia is increasingly utilizing ballistic missiles, including the Zircon and the upgraded Iskander-1000, because Ukraine has successfully intercepted over 90% of cruise missiles and drones. This tactical shift has created a critical challenge for Ukraine, which is currently experiencing shortages of PAC-3 interceptors for its MIM-104 Patriot systems.

Yehor Cherniev, deputy chairman of the Ukrainian parliament's national security committee, characterized the transition to high-speed ballistic weapons and jet drones as an "extremely dangerous stage of the war." He stated that the situation requires increased effectiveness against jet drones and additional assistance from the United States in the form of PAC-3 missiles.
