Bank of Japan Holds Interest Rate at 1.0 Percent

The Bank of Japan maintained its policy interest rate at 1.0% while signaling potential future hikes to combat inflation risks.

The Bank of Japan maintained its policy interest rate at 1.0% following a two-day monetary policy meeting that concluded July 31, 2026. The decision passed with an 8-1 vote, though board member Hajime Takata advocated for an increase to 1.25% to better address external threats.

Governor Kazuo Ueda warned that the bank may accelerate the pace of interest rate hikes if financial conditions remain too accommodative, noting the risk that inflation could overshoot the 2% target. This caution comes as the bank slightly lowered its fiscal 2026 inflation forecast, excluding fresh food, to a range of 2.3% to 2.7% from the previous April projection of 2.8% to 3%.

Policymakers cited the depreciation of the yen and volatile oil prices in the Middle East as primary drivers of price instability. Following the announcement, the yen surged against the dollar. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama declined to confirm whether the government intervened in the currency market, despite a warning from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding potential yen undervaluation.
