Taiwan Blocks Coinbase and Kalshi Over Election Betting

Taiwan has blocked access to Coinbase and Kalshi after authorities alleged the platforms facilitated illegal gambling on upcoming local election outcomes.

A New Taipei court has authorized the blocking of websites for Coinbase Global Inc. and Kalshi Inc. following allegations that the platforms facilitated illegal election betting. The Criminal Investigation Bureau sought the restrictions after determining the platforms likely violated the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, which bans profit-driven gambling based on election or recall results.

These measures come ahead of local polls scheduled for November 28, which serve as a critical test for the government of President Lai Ching-te. Authorities stated the blocks aim to protect election integrity and prevent overseas interference. While the government has previously warned about illicit financial flows from mainland China intended to influence elections, officials have not specifically alleged that Coinbase or Kalshi handled Chinese funds.

Taiwan has also blocked the prediction market rival Polymarket. Under a 2023 amendment to the election act, gambling operators in Taiwan can face up to five years in prison for violating these laws.
