IG Metall Launches Widespread German Industrial Strikes
IG Metall union workers began widespread strikes across Germany's metal and electrical engineering sectors demanding a 5% wage increase and job security.
Workers in Germany's metal and electrical engineering industry launched widespread strikes on Monday, impacting major companies including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Tata Steel. The IG Metall union, which represents 3.7 million employees, is demanding a 5% wage increase starting in November, along with profit-sharing mechanisms and job security measures.
The industrial action follows the union's rejection of a second-round offer from employers. IG Metall characterized the proposal as a real-terms pay cut, noting that the offer only included a 1.3% wage increase starting in July 2028 and a one-off 1% payment in July 2027. The union further noted that financially struggling firms could withhold the one-off payment.
Strikes are expected to continue throughout the week. The union plans to release official participation figures on Friday.
