Chicago Mayor Faces Protests Over Quantum Park Development

Mayor Brandon Johnson faced boos from South Side residents protesting a state-funded quantum technology park and potential data center construction.

Residents of Chicago's South Side booed Brandon Johnson off stage during a Saturday town hall and "Community Over Quantum" rally organized by the community group Southside Together. Protesters demanded the total shutdown of the Quantum Shore development at the former U.S. Steel South Works site, a project championed by Governor J.B. Pritzker that includes $500 million in state taxpayer funding and tax incentives for anchor company PsiQuantum.

Community members expressed concerns regarding environmental justice, public health, and the possibility that the project serves as a cover for a data center. In response, Mayor Johnson cited a recent executive order toughening regulations on data center noise, air pollution, and resource usage, and noted his call for a City Council moratorium on new data center construction. He informed the crowd that he received a letter from developers stating the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) would not include a data center.

However, a mayoral spokesperson later clarified that this commitment applies only to the smaller IQMP site rather than the entire 440-acre Quantum Shore campus. This distinction leaves the status of a previously announced one-gigawatt hyperscale data center uncertain. While IQMP CEO Harley Johnson maintained that the 128-acre campus is built specifically for quantum technology and microelectronics innovation, Southside Together continues to oppose the development, accusing Governor Pritzker and PsiQuantum of ignoring community desires.
