India Records Highest Ever August Automobile Sales in 2026

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported that India's automobile industry achieved its highest ever August sales across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers in 2026. Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches to dealers surged 36.5% year-on-year to 439,309 units, while two-wheeler sales rose 10.5% to 2,034,698 units and three-wheeler dispatches grew 22.8% to 93,764 units.

While domestic demand peaked, passenger vehicle exports declined 17% to 68,230 units. However, this was partially offset by a 23.7% increase in utility vehicle exports and growth in other sectors, with two-wheeler and three-wheeler exports rising 28.5% and 31.3% respectively. Total passenger vehicle production increased by 25.7% to 454,266 units.

Industry leadership attributes the domestic surge to strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improved financing conditions, and the accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains. It was noted that the growth was also supported by a lower base from the previous year. The industry expects the upcoming festive season to provide an additional boost to demand, contributing to healthy second-quarter numbers.
