Judge Blocks Indiana Law Banning Student Voter IDs

U.S. District Judge Richard Young blocked Indiana from enforcing a law that removed student IDs as acceptable forms of voter identification.

U.S. District Judge Richard Young issued a preliminary injunction on Tuesday blocking Indiana from enforcing Senate Bill 10. The 2025 law removed college-issued student identification cards from the list of acceptable IDs for voting, a change that Judge Young ruled likely violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments by placing unconstitutional burdens on students and young voters.

In his ruling, Young noted that the state continued to accept other non-driver IDs, such as those from tribal nations and the Veterans Administration, while selectively excluding student IDs that had been utilized for nearly two decades. The court estimated that approximately 40,000 students could be affected by the restriction.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced that his office intends to appeal the decision, arguing that the state's voter ID requirements are necessary for election security and integrity. The injunction ensures that students can continue using campus IDs to vote while the legal challenge proceeds.
