Tamil Nadu Presents State and First Agriculture Budgets

Tamil Nadu officials present the 2026-27 state budget and the first-ever dedicated agriculture budget to target a 1.5 trillion dollar economy by 2031.

The Government of Tamil Nadu introduced two major financial roadmaps on August 5 and 6, 2026. Finance Minister Marie Wilson first tabled the general state budget, which outlines a strategy to transform Tamil Nadu into a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2031. This budget prioritizes education with Rs 44,527 crore for schools and Rs 8,393 crore for higher education, while introducing the Vetri Laptop Scheme and the Super Clean, Super Campus initiative. To raise Rs 1,000 crore, the government proposed a special levy on liquor manufacturing units.

Following the general budget, Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister R Vinoth presented the state's first-ever maiden Agriculture Budget for 2026-27 in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. This dedicated agricultural focus complements previous welfare measures announced by Chief Minister Vijay, including crop loan waivers of up to Rs 50,000 for marginal farmers and Rs 5,000 for larger farmers.
