Offshore Wind Projects Create 180 Jobs at Montrose Port
SSE and Subsea Micropiles are investing in the Port of Montrose to establish a wind farm operations base and a turbine component factory.
Two offshore wind initiatives at the Port of Montrose in Angus, Scotland, are expected to create approximately 180 green energy jobs. SSE has selected the port's South Harbour as the preferred operations and maintenance base for the 1.4 GW Berwick Bank B offshore wind farm, located 38 km off the east coast in the Firth of Forth. This hub is projected to create 100 full-time roles for engineers and technicians over a 35-year lifespan, with another 30 jobs during construction. If subsequent phases of the larger 4.1 GW project proceed, operational roles could reach nearly 300.
Simultaneously, engineering firm Subsea Micropiles is investing £5 million to build a manufacturing facility for deep-water turbine anchors. The project is supported by £6.7 million from the Scottish National Investment Bank and £1.45 million from Scottish Enterprise.
First Minister John Swinney stated the investments demonstrate a "strong vote of confidence" in the sector. SSE expects to reach a final investment decision on Berwick Bank B next year, following a 20-year contract secured in January through the UK government's Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 7. The Berwick project aims to use up to 307 turbines to power six million homes, potentially meeting over 6% of UK electricity demand.
