OpenAI Gives 100,000 Academic Researchers Free GPT-5.6 Access

OpenAI launched a program providing 100,000 academic researchers free access to its frontier AI models through 2027 to accelerate scientific discovery.

OpenAI launched the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, granting free access to its frontier AI models for up to 100,000 researchers through 2027. The initiative begins this summer with an initial group of 10,000 users from institutions including the École normale supérieure and the Institute for Advanced Study. Participants receive access to the top-tier GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model and can invite four collaborators.

This program is part of a broader commitment by the company to fund external research exceeding $250 million. To manage the costs of this scale, OpenAI optimized its open-source agent harness and used GPT-5.6 to rewrite its production kernels, which improved token efficiency by more than 15%.

While the initiative targets breakthroughs in climate modeling and genomics, some critics argue the program creates a commercial dependence on a proprietary stack because researchers receive interface access instead of model weights.
