Barbados Declares National Mourning After Death of Sir Garfield Sobers

Barbados declared national mourning following the death of cricket legend and National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers at age 89.

Barbados has entered a period of national mourning following the death of Sir Garfield Sobers, a National Hero and legendary West Indies all-rounder who passed away at age 89. Prime Minister Mia Mottley declared July 17, 2026, a national day of mourning, with a second day of mourning scheduled for the date of his interment. During these periods, flags will fly at half-mast and official functions will be suspended.

Sobers is widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket. Between 1954 and 1974, he played 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets. His career milestones include a score of 365 not out—the highest individual Test score until 1994—and becoming the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket in 1968.

President Jeffrey Bostic described Sobers as the embodiment of Barbadian excellence, while ICC Chairman Jay Shah called him one of the greatest icons the sport has known. The Barbados Police Service also issued a tribute, noting that Sobers developed his early skills at the Barbados Police Sports Club. International Cricket Council and West Indies Players’ Association officials joined national leaders in mourning the athlete whose legacy remains etched in the record books of the sport.
