UK Ministry of Defence Signs £400 Million Google Cloud Deal

The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom contracted Google Cloud for £400 million to integrate AI and cybersecurity tools and strengthen secure communications with the United States.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom signed a £400 million contract with Google Cloud on September 12, 2025, to modernize national security operations and defense intelligence. The agreement provides UK specialists with advanced AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity tools, allowing the UK to deploy technology and classification levels consistent with those used by the United States to improve allied missions and secure communication links.

As part of the deal, Google Cloud will invest millions of pounds in the UK and recruit a local specialist team to manage the program. This initiative aligns with the UK government's Plan for Change and the Strategic Defence Review, aiming to create a digitally integrated force. To maintain data sovereignty, the MOD specified that critical data will remain under direct UK control and will not be communicated to the US via the platform.

The announcement precedes a state visit to Britain by US President Donald Trump, intended to further strengthen the "special relationship" and promote economic growth. UK officials noted that the investment serves as an engine for growth by supporting highly skilled jobs and the British tech startup ecosystem.
