Israeli Citizens Abroad Challenge Voter Registry Removal

Approximately 120 Israeli citizens living abroad have launched a legal initiative called Our Right to Vote - Code 51 to challenge their removal from the national voter registry before the October 27 elections. The affected individuals were flagged with Code 51, an administrative designation that classifies citizens as nonresidents. Many report their status changed after visiting Israeli consulates, where officials confiscated their domestic ID cards.

Gilead Sher, the attorney representing the group, has submitted letters and Freedom of Information requests to the Central Elections Commission, the attorney-general, and the Interior Ministry. Sher argues that the designation cannot override the constitutional right to vote.

The Interior Ministry has not disclosed the specific criteria used to apply Code 51, though spokesperson Yaffa Shai stated that election law requires voters to be registered residents with an address in Israel. The group intends to file an emergency petition with the High Court of Justice if the matter is not resolved by the September 3 registry deadline.
