Cuba Marks Fidel Castro Centennial Amid Severe Economic Crisis

Cuba commemorated the 100th birthday of former leader Fidel Castro on August 14, 2026, with concerts, art exhibitions, and the International Book Fair. Miguel Díaz-Canel, the President of Cuba, attended a photo exhibition in Havana and praised Castro as a man embodying the ideas for which the nation fights against imperial threats. Former president Raúl Castro also made a rare public appearance at the Karl Marx Theater during the tributes.

The centennial occurred as Cuba struggles with a severe economic crisis marked by power outages, medicine shortages, and reduced work and school hours. This instability was intensified by a fuel blockade and sanctions imposed by the United States government in January to pressure the communist administration into implementing political and economic reforms.

Public reaction to the anniversary remained divided. Supporters and officials, including National Assembly member Miguel Barnet, defended Castro's legacy of dignity and his policies regarding public health and education. Conversely, opposition figures and some younger citizens criticized the system Castro architected, arguing that he sacrificed political freedoms and eliminated plurality in Cuba.
