Justice Department Charges 104 People in Non-Citizen Voting Crackdown

The United States Department of Justice and state authorities are prosecuting over 100 individuals for unlawful voting and fraudulent registration across multiple states.

The United States Department of Justice has charged 64 foreign nationals across 17 states with unlawful voting and fraudulent registration over a five-week period. Since 2025, the department has charged a total of 104 people with voting fraud-related offenses as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to tighten registration requirements. These federal initiatives have faced some legal challenges, including a U.S. District Court ruling against a Justice Department data collection project.

State authorities are pursuing similar actions in New York, Michigan, and Florida. Federal prosecutors in New York recently charged five lawful permanent residents for voting in federal elections. In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel charged five non-citizens for voting in 2024, while Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini identified non-citizens on voter rolls using jury summons data. In Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier recently charged 20 individuals for election fraud following a crackdown led by Governor Ron DeSantis.

While some groups in Florida allege that non-citizens cast over 7,000 ballots between 2020 and 2026, data from the Heritage Foundation indicates that individual instances of voter fraud remain rare. Analysis of the foundation's database shows nationwide fraud occurs at a rate of approximately 67 cases per year, representing significantly less than one in a million voters.
