China Warns Japan Over Nuclear Ambitions and Chemical Weapons

The Government of the People's Republic of China issued two distinct warnings to Japan on July 30, 2026, regarding nuclear proliferation and the disposal of wartime chemical weapons.

The Ministry of National Defense declared that Japan's perceived nuclear ambitions constitute a "red line that should never be crossed." This reaction followed statements by the Japanese defense minister suggesting that nuclear-weapon policies should be discussed "without taboos," including potential revisions to non-nuclear principles maintained since World War II. Spokesperson Jiang Bin described these remarks as "extremely provocative and dangerous," noting that Japan is a nuclear-threshold state with approximately 44.4 metric tons of separated plutonium.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Japan to accelerate the disposal of chemical weapons abandoned in China during World War II. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Japan has failed to meet destruction deadlines in 2007, 2012, 2016, and 2022. China claims these delays stem from a lack of sincerity and insufficient information from Japan regarding burial sites, which continue to pose hazards to the environment and public safety.
