UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting Reports Surge in Homophobic Abuse

Wes Streeting reports receiving an unprecedented volume of online homophobic abuse since becoming the first openly gay defence secretary of the United Kingdom.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting reported receiving an "unbelievable volume" of homophobic abuse online following his appointment last month. Speaking on the All Talk podcast, Streeting stated he has experienced more online homophobia in the last three weeks than in his entire life, attributing the hostility to a lack of acceptance regarding a gay person leading the United Kingdom's armed forces.

Streeting contrasted this online backlash with the reactions of some Ministry of Defence personnel, who welcomed his appointment as a sign of progress. He noted the shift from the era before 2000, when gay and lesbian personnel were banned from service, a legacy the Government of the United Kingdom addressed in 2024 through the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme to compensate dismissed personnel.

As part of his duties, Streeting liaises with U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth has actively opposed equality and inclusion initiatives, including the renaming of a U.S. Navy ship that had previously been honored in memory of gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
