Romania Installs Neptun Alpha Platform for Black Sea Gas Project

OMV Petrom and Romgaz have completed the installation of the Neptun Alpha offshore production platform in the Black Sea, marking a major milestone for the Neptun Deep project. The platform stands over 225 meters tall, weighs 16,500 metric tons, and was positioned approximately 120 meters below sea level using the Saipem 7000 crane vessel. The structure was manufactured by Saipem in Italy and Indonesia.

Project partners have already completed six of ten development wells and installed a 160-kilometer pipeline connecting the offshore field to a metering station in Tuzla. Remaining work includes drilling the final production wells and integrating subsea pipelines and umbilicals. Commercial gas production is scheduled to begin in 2027.

Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that the project will establish Romania as the largest gas producer in the European Union, which he believes will stabilize gas prices for households and fertilizer production while supporting industrial recovery. OMV Petrom CEO Christina Verchere and Romgaz CEO Răzvan Popescu confirmed the project's progress, noting that the installation followed the highest safety standards to enhance national energy security and reduce dependence on imports.
