Energy Efficiency Council Ranks Australian State Energy Policies

The Energy Efficiency Council released a national scorecard rating Australian states on home electrification and energy efficiency policies to address rising cost-of-living pressures.

The Energy Efficiency Council released a national scorecard on Thursday rating household energy policies across Australian states and territories. Funded by Energy Consumers Australia, the 54-page report analyzed home electrification, energy efficiency, and peak power usage during a period of high interest rates and rising fuel prices.

The Australian Capital Territory ranked highest overall due to its low-interest loans, rebates, and home energy-efficiency standards. Victoria earned the top score for electrification by requiring the replacement of gas appliances in rental and new properties. New South Wales ranked third, though the report noted the state lacks a formal plan to phase out gas.

Queensland and the Northern Territory received the lowest ratings, each scoring one star out of 10. The report highlighted that Queensland offers no incentive schemes or rebates for electrification. South Australia was recognized for its support of virtual power plants but was noted for lacking a home energy ratings scheme.
