Australian Job Applications Hit Record High in June

Seek reports a record number of job applications per advertised position in Australia, while data center roles drive growth in construction and trade sectors.

Job applications per advertised position in Australia reached a record high in June, according to a monthly employment report from Seek Limited. The number of applications per listing increased by 1.2 percent, continuing a steady upward trend since January. This rise in competition occurred despite an overall decline in the total number of job advertisements across most sectors.

Construction and trade-based industries defied the general trend of shrinking opportunities. Blair Chapman, chief economist of Seek, identified rising demand for positions specifically related to the planning, construction, and maintenance of data centers.

Government data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics provides a broader context to the labor market. The official unemployment rate remained steady at 4.4 percent in June. However, the participation rate rose to 67.0 percent, marking the highest level of workforce engagement since July 2025.
